Healthy Young America

A Guest Post by the Young Invincibles Team

Health coverage is important for everyone, especially young people. With 27% of young adults lacking insurance nationally, the new provisions in the Affordable Care Act signify big changes to health care coverage for millions of uninsured and underinsured young adults. Already, over 3 million previously uninsured young adults have joined their parent’s health plan. With the marketplaces now open, as many as 17 million uninsured young adults could be eligible for free or low-cost health insurance in the coming years.

There are so many new options for young adults that it can become super confusing and overwhelming to navigate on your own. That’s why Young Invincibles launched our Healthy Young America campaign this past year.  Our goal is to educate young adults about their new insurance options.

As we explored strategies to reach out to millennials, their innovative and tech-savvy nature became apparent.

To tap into the creativity and social media addiction of young adults, we partnered with the Department of Health and Human Services to launch our Healthy Young America Video Contest. Participants submitted videos in three categories: You Are Not Invincible, Animation and Perform a Song. We posted these videos on our website and (where else but) Youtube, so that followers could easily share their favorite videos on social media throughout the voting process. The contest ended a few weeks ago, and the videos reached hundreds of thousands of young people proving that Internet grassroots projects can work to educate millennials!

While the video contest was extremely successful, we are always looking for new and exciting ways to reach 18-34 year olds. Research (and a bit of common sense) shows that young people are the largest users of mobile applications and smartphones. We recently released a 3.0 version of our Healthy Young America mobile app, created so young people can get the information they need to make health care decisions in the way they know best–through their mobile phones.

Things are constantly evolving in the world of millennials, technology and health care, and we will continue to keep up and inform our generation about their health care options!  We are excited to be working with ZocDoc and informing their users about the innovative ways that we’ve been able to teach young adults about their health care options.
